Mid-Term: Text Analysis

Cirrus

Description

Sources

I used the text file of the book called ”Travels through the Interior Parts of North America, in the Years 1766, 1767, and 1768” as the primary source of this mini-project.

Processes

I only did a few data cleaning for the text file. Particularly I made sure to delete any direction texts that were not part of the book text. I then did a spelling check using google docs to make sure there were no spelling errors. In addition, I used the voyant tool to filter some stop words that are common words in English in order to make a more accurate map of text analysis that analyzes the word frequency in the book.

Presentation

I made a new webpage for this mini-project, in which I embedded the text-analysis map into the page and changed its size to be bigger and easier to navigate. There are options that allow the user to change to different types of data visualization including but not limited to trends, links, and bubbles which help with gaining more information about the text.

Significance

Creating a text analysis map is a great digital approach for analyzing the word frequency of a book which can give us insights about what are the important concepts in the book and how the words relate to each other. For example, the words Indians, river, great, nation, and lake are some of the most frequently used words in the book which tells us that this book is about the natives and their relation to nature. In addition, the trend map shows how these words are used in different parts of the book. For instance, the words Indians and river increase drastically at the end of the book which puts an emphasis on the importance of rivers and natural resources to the native Indians who view them as scared and how natural resources play an essential role in the culture and belief system of natives. Overall, this digital approach can help us better understand a book and the message that the author is trying to convey by analyzing word frequency using various data visualization techniques.
